College Admissions Manager Job Description & Career Opportunities

The duty of a college admissions manager is to recruit students to enroll in a certain college or university. Also known as college director of admissions, the college admissions manager works with prospective students and school administrators regarding recruitment and admissions. He also makes decisions on what type of students is to be accepted for admission.

College admissions managers are employed at all levels of education. Opportunities are available in many types of public and private institutions including preschools, grammar schools, secondary schools, community colleges, technical schools, and colleges and universities.
Duties and Responsibilities

Generally, college admissions managers head a school’s admissions program. They assist in all aspects of the admissions and recruitment process.

Duties include evaluating the academic records of prospective student, judging standardized test scores, managing the admissions staff, and working with other school administrators in developing criteria, tests, and policies. They may assist in developing, maintaining and executing a department’s communication plan to prospective and enrolled students.

College admissions managers assist in preparing a marketing plan that promotes the institution’s visibility and general recruitment efforts. They develop and monitor statistical records to be able to improve recruitment strategies, yield management, forecasting, and overall operational efficiency.

Also, college admissions managers are assigned to attend recruitment related events and be the institution’s representative. Providing information to prospective students and their parents about the school and its enrollment policies are also done by college admissions managers. They make sure they meet the enrollment goals in a target area.

They perform evaluation and implement admission guidelines on applicant files. In some instances, the college admissions manager works hand in hand with the school’s registrar and financial aid department. They help in the creation and development of scholarships and other programs that can boost recruitment as well as aid those who cannot afford tuition.
Skills and Education

Aspiring college admissions managers should have at least a bachelor’s degree and work experience related to admissions. Most prestigious institutions prefer candidates with a master’s degree or doctoral degree in education or a related field. Work experience in line with managing professional and student staff is also an advantage.

Knowledge of accounting and statistics is definitely an advantage. Candidates must be computer literate and must have knowledge on applications like word processing.

Communication skill is vital, particularly those skilled in public speaking. He also must have excellent skills in sales and marketing.

A college admissions manager should naturally have the drive to help and guide people. Besides, he will be spending most of his time advising students.
Work Conditions and Salary

College admissions managers are office-based employees. However, travel may be needed especially during recruitment events. Also, expect to work more than 40 hours a week including weekends and evenings.

Compensation depends on the institution of employment. Most of those serving for colleges and universities earn from $44,644 to $75,314 per year. Also, there is an expected rise in demand for college admissions managers in the future.
