Insurance Verification Job Description & Career Opportunities

An insurance verification candidate is a high school graduate or possesses a GED. He has an advantage when his experience lies in insurance verification or medical billing procedures. He is patient in dealing with patients, family members or visitors of the patient, colleagues, and physicians. He is attentive to details and can work under minimal supervision. He can make decisions on his own as needed and can solve problems based on his own analysis. He is willing to undergo further training or enrichment activities while working for his professional growth. His typing skills, communication skills, computer skills, and strong ethics are sought after.

Responsibilities

At the medical facility where he works, the insurance verification personnel see to it that the third party patient insurance information that he gets is accurate. He cooperates with his colleagues, superiors, physicians, and the administration. When he observes a possible emergency for the patient, he informs the appropriate people concerned immediately. He attends briefings conscientiously and recommends strategies for improvement of operations constructively. He follows the standards and policies of the medical facility where he works. He can do obligations as mentioned in the instructions. He can follow through on deadlines. His punctuality in attending to patient concerns is important. His attendance is also very crucial for the insurance verification work.

Doing this work requires the candidate to communicate with the patient, the family members or significant other of the patient, physicians, insurance company personnel, facility personnel, medical director, and medical insurance agents. He is knowledgeable of the safety procedures of the medical facility and applies them completely. He keeps his work area clean, safe, and organized. He shows professionalism with everybody whom he encounters. He always lends a helping hand to people at work as he sees fit. He reports any hazardous objects that he notices to the appropriate personnel. He complies with all the policies and procedures of the medical facility.

Obligations

The insurance verification candidate is asked to verify all coverage for commercial insurance, worker’s insurance for his pay, and insurance for accidents. At a physician’s clinic, the precertification number is gotten as needed. He determines whether the patient is eligible for insurance coverage from a third party and informs him of the status. He is knowledgeable of the insurance contracts that the medical facility possesses. The payment schedules for these contracts are also in his knowledge. Prior to the admission of the patient, he encodes if the patient is prequalified to be paid via insurance.
